We moved traditional accounting fully to a mobile app

Small-business accounting ran on paper, physical office visits, and email. We digitised the entire service flow — invoices, tax returns, and document exchange all on the phone.

Starting point

Small-business accounting used to live on paper invoices, physical office visits, and email courage. Instead of running their business, owners spent time travelling to the accountant, dropping off documents, and signing reports. That's time they can't bill, and it doesn't scale.

The brief was clear: digitise the traditional accounting service end to end through a mobile app. The owner issues invoices, uploads documents, and approves reports from the phone. The accountant works on the other side.

Decisions

  1. Mobile-first — phone, not web, is the starting point. The owner is moving around all day, not sitting at a desk.
  2. Invoices, tax, reports all in one app. Document exchange surfaces through push notifications.
  3. Accountant dashboard on the other side — all clients in one view.
  4. Templates aligned with local tax rules — report formats auto-filled.

Execution

Stack: React Native iOS + Android, Laravel backend, push notifications, OCR for receipt scans. Accountant panel in Vue.js — heavier load, desktop suits it better.

“Digitising a traditional service isn't a technical project — it's a behaviour-change project. The owner had to develop the habit of doing accounting from a phone.”

Result

  • Owners no longer travel to the accountant — hours saved per day.
  • Document exchange via push — nothing gets lost.
  • Accountant manages every client in one view — finally scalable.
  • Tax templates auto-fill — no more manual formatting.
